Elon Musk, the founder of X (formerly Twitter), has claimed that the platform was the target of a “massive cyberattack” on Monday, affecting users worldwide.
Many reported being unable to log in, while others saw error messages such as “Something went wrong, try reloading.”
Musk stated on X that the attack involved such vast resources that he believed it could only be the work of a “coordinated group” or a foreign country, Daily Mail reports.
His statement was in response to a post from X user DogeDesigner, who wrote, “First, protests against DOGE. Then, Tesla stores were attacked.
“Now, X is down.” Musk replied, “Yes,” to another user’s comment suggesting, “They want to silence you and this platform.”
Downdetector, which tracks online outages, recorded over 40,000 reports of issues by 10 am ET. Data showed 58% of affected users faced problems with the app, 31% with the website, and 11% with server connections. Reports of disruptions were spread nationwide.
The alleged attack on X follows mounting tensions surrounding Musk’s political involvement. Since aligning himself with President Donald Trump, Musk has led the new Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), which has overseen sweeping layoffs in federal agencies and the closure of government programs.
Tesla stores have also become the target of attacks and protests. On Saturday, a crowd of about 250 demonstrators gathered outside a Tesla showroom in New York City, holding placards reading “Block Fascism Now” and “Musk Must Go.”
They chanted, “Elon Musk is not elected! Democracy must be protected!” Five protesters were arrested for disorderly conduct, while another was taken into custody for resisting arrest and obstruction.
Acts of vandalism against Tesla properties have surged since Trump’s inauguration. More than a dozen incidents have been reported, including an attack on a Tesla showroom in Salem, Oregon, where a suspect fired an AR-15-style rifle in February.
In January, the same store suffered damage from molotov cocktails, allegedly thrown by Adam Matthew Lansky, 41.
In Seattle, four Tesla Cybertrucks were set on fire in an industrial storage lot. Officials confirmed at least two vehicles were severely damaged, and police are investigating whether arson was involved.
As for X, Musk has previously blamed platform issues on external attacks.
