Let’s take the battle to them and clear them out of our forests….
If we stick with the principles…. State actors should be able to overwhelm non state actors with whatever the appropriate equipment is to use – even if Pro-Force has to make it specifically for forest-purpose.
In which other countries across the world have governments had to engage terrorists (or call them bandits, if we want to) in forests in order to eliminate them and re-establish law and order?
See examples below:
Several countries have had to send security forces into forested areas to confront armed groups/terrorists and restore state control. Forests, hills, and jungles are often used as hideouts because they provide cover and make air/ground operations harder. A few major examples:
1. Colombia
Group: FARC
Forest: Amazon jungle, Cordillera mountains, border forests
Context: For decades 1964-2016, the Colombian Armed Forces ran counter-insurgency ops like “Operation Jupiter”, “Operation Sodom” in jungle terrain. FARC used forest camps as HQ. The campaign aimed to weaken FARC and reassert state authority in rural zones. Led to the 2016 peace deal.
2. India
Group: Naxalites/Maoists
Forest: “Red Corridor” – Dandakaranya Forest spanning Chhattisgarh, Odisha, Jharkhand, Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh
Context: Indian security forces run “Operation Green Hunt” and ongoing anti-Naxal ops in dense forests. Naxals use forests as bases. Goal: dismantle camps, allow development/admin to return.
3. Sri Lanka
Group: LTTE
Forest: Wanni jungles, Mullaitivu forests
Context: Final phase 2008-2009 of Sri Lanka’s civil war involved the military pushing LTTE out of jungle strongholds in northern Sri Lanka to end the conflict and re-establish control.
4. Philippines
Group: Abu Sayyaf, BIFF, NPA
Forest/Jungle: Sulu archipelago jungles, Mindanao forests
Context: AFP has conducted repeated jungle operations like “Operation Ultimatum” against Abu Sayyaf in Sulu’s forests, and vs NPA in Luzon/Visayas forests. Goal: eliminate bases and restore order in remote areas.
5. Peru
Group: Shining Path
Forest: VRAEM region – Valle de los Ríos Apurímac, Ene y Mantaro jungle
Context: Peruvian military + police still run jungle ops in VRAEM. Shining Path remnants use dense forest terrain. Operations aim to break drug-terror links and restore state presence.
6. Democratic Republic of Congo
Group: ADF, FDLR, other militias
Forest: Ituri Forest, Kivu forests
Context: FARDC + MONUSCO forces conduct forest operations vs ADF/Islamic State-linked groups. Forests provide cover in eastern DRC. Goal: protect civilians, re-establish government control.
Let us not just approve 1000 not-adequately-equipped rangers walking around Nigeria’s forests on foot…
If we secure our citizens, we can enjoy the fruits of all other policy improvements 🙏🏾
