Too late
Days after telecommunication network was cut off, Zamfara state governor, Bello Matawalle, has revealed that window of amnesty he gave bandits has expired.
Matawalle said the decision became necessary after the bandits failed to embrace the peace initiative earlier extended to them by the state government.
The governor who spoke on Friday after attending in Gusau, the state capital said, “They (bandits) sent a powerful committee to plead with us to cease fire and allow supply (of food and other essential commodities) but I refused.
“What we are doing to bandits is to send them to God, so they can answer their questions.”
According to the governor, bandits who are currently facing the heat of the superior fire of security operatives have sent some persons to inform him that they have repented.
He said the criminals were ready for a dialogue over the security situation in Zamfara, but it was too late for them to have a rethink.
Governor Matawalle revealed that some of the bandits were running out of Zamfara to other states, as a result of the suffering imposed by the new security measures introduced by the state government to cut off the supply of food, petrol, and other essential commodities to them in the bush.

What took these governments this long to take the actions they have embarked on recently? What was the point in waiting for over 3 years to deal with these blood sucking savages tagged bandits? Why were they pardoning and reintegrating them into our armed forces? Nigerians know that many of the so-called bandits are also Boko Haram members who saw kidnaps as a lucrative business and then decided to cross over to ‘terrorist-bandits’. Who, and or, how did the French speaking and other African Fulanis find their way into Nigeria? Who armed them? Rumors, conspiracy theories and outright accusations that officials in the state and federal governments are members of these terrorist organizations as they are their sponsors. What do these people want? Could this be the subtle threat America gave by offering to assist the Federal government in unmasking the sponsors of these terrorist organizations which the Nigerian government has been quiet on? The silence of Mr. Buhari in accepting this offer on its own, is telling.
With the recent development whereby our military force is decimating the enclaves and hideouts of these criminals, cutting off their food supplies and communication show that the government have always known what to do in stopping the menace these criminals have become to the Nigerian society.
It is better to be late than never, therefore, while the actions in dealing with these terrorist is a very welcome and a heartening development, and long may it continue until the last of these miscreants are removed from the Nigerian society by death or long term imprisonments.
However, Nigerians should not be expected to be over the moon or to give a pass to these governors or the presidency because of their recent war on these terrorists by our forces given that one death was too many. There have been hundreds of thousands of lives that have been lost, billions of naira and properties lost to the terrorists needlessly.
If the president Buhari wants to prove to Nigerians and the world that he is truly serious and genuine in bringing all the culprits of these dastardly acts and heinous crimes against the people he swore an oath to protect and secure, he must set up an investigative unit/panel to investigate and get to the bottom of the sponsors of terrorism in Nigeria and bring them to book severely, to deter such acts of treason/terrorism against Nigeria and her people from ever happening again. If he fails to do so, just like he has not accepted the United States offer to help with naming the sponsors, this will be telling and Nigerians and the rest of the world will be left with no other conclusion than that he is protecting these people at the least.
