Following the sexual assault of women and other heinous crimes at a festival in Ozoro, Isoko North Council of Delta State, the state Commissioner of Police, Aina Adesola, has ordered an immediate, thorough investigation into the incident after receiving disturbing videos.
The chief organiser of the local event, Chief Omorede Sunday, along with four other suspects, has been arrested.
According to the police public relations officer in the state, SP Bright Edafe, the Command has unequivocally condemned these acts, stating that sexual violence is criminal, inhumane, and constitutes a grave violation of the fundamental rights and dignity of the victims.
Edafe also indicated that the Commissioner of Police has ordered the case to be transferred immediately to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) for further investigation.
“Tactical and investigative assets have been duly deployed with a clear mandate to identify, apprehend, and ensure the prosecution of all individuals found culpable.
“The Command urges members of the public, particularly victims and witnesses, to come forward with any information that will aid ongoing investigations. All information provided will be treated with strict confidentiality and the highest level of professionalism”.
“The Commissioner of Police further appeals to residents of the State to remain calm, vigilant, and law-abiding, while assuring that the Command remains fully committed to protecting lives, safeguarding the rights of all citizens, and maintaining public order.
The Delta State Police Command condemns this development in totality and assures that all those involved in these reprehensible acts will be arrested and prosecuted in accordance with the law.
The state government had earlier called on security agencies, particularly the Nigeria Police, to urgently investigate the incident and ensure that those responsible are identified and brought to book.
In a statement issued on Friday, Commissioner for Works ( rural roads and public information) Mr Charles Aniagwu, said the government was deeply disturbed by the reports of the harassment, adding that no individual or group should be allowed to hide under the guise of a festival to perpetrate criminal activities.
