‘We can’t evacuate or assist you this time,’ US Embassy tells Americans in Israel

The United States Embassy in Israel has said it is unable to evacuate or directly assist American citizens seeking to leave the country amid the worsening security situation.

In a notice issued to U.S. citizens posted via X account, the Embassy said, “As a result of the current security situation throughout the region, the U.S. Embassy has directed that all U.S. government employees and their family members continue to shelter in place in and near their residences until further notice.”

It added, “The U.S. Embassy is not in a position at this time to evacuate or directly assist Americans in departing Israel.”

The Embassy advised Americans to make their own security arrangements and provided information on available exit options. It disclosed that the Israeli Ministry of Tourism has begun operating shuttles to the Taba Border Crossing as of March 2. 

Those interested in using the service must register through the Ministry’s evacuation form.

However, the Embassy cautioned, “The U.S. Embassy cannot make any recommendation (for or against) the Ministry of Tourism’s shuttle. If you choose to avail yourself of this option to depart, the U.S. government cannot guarantee your safety. The information is provided as a courtesy to those wishing to leave Israel.”

Passengers intending to cross into Jordan were advised to take the shuttle to Eilat and proceed by taxi to the Yitzhak Rabin Border Crossing. Meeting points for buses include Herzliya Train Station Parking Lot, Haifa Yad HaShmona Train Station Parking Lot, Jerusalem Teddy Stadium East Parking Lot, and Tel Aviv Savidor Center Train Station Parking.

The Embassy also noted that the Taba land crossing into Egypt was operating 24 hours daily, though some travellers may be required to pay a visa fee. It recommended advance payment via the official website, warning, “The toll is valid only for the specific date of purchase and cannot be changed or refunded.”

As of March 2, flight options from Taba and Sharm al-Sheikh airports in Egypt were limited. The Southern (Yitzhak Rabin/Wadi Araba) crossing into Jordan accepts its last passengers at 1900. Queen Alia International Airport in Jordan remained open, with limited flights operated by Royal Jordanian Airlines.

The Embassy urged U.S. citizens to follow guidance from the Israel Home Front Command and remain vigilant, noting that security incidents “often take place without any warning” and that “The security environment is complex and can change quickly.”

It further warned that travel restrictions on U.S. government personnel and their families could be expanded without notice, including to areas of Jerusalem and the West Bank.

On safety procedures, the Embassy said, “In the event of mortar or rocket fire or Hostile Aircraft Intrusion, a ‘red alert’ siren may be activated. Treat all such alerts as real. Follow the instructions from local authorities and seek shelter immediately. Know the location of your closest shelter or protected space.”

Americans were encouraged to consult official sources, including the Israel Defense Forces Home Front Command website and related mobile applications, for real-time security updates.
