The Rivers State House of Assembly on Friday returned to its plenary after a one-week break, insisting on proceeding with the process of impeachment against Governor Siminalayi Fubara and his deputy, Prof Ngozi Odu.
The house insistence is coming on the heels of several efforts currently ongoing to resolve the face-off and have them drop the impeachment proceedings, which have created so much tension in the state and beyond.
The Assembly made its position known on Friday, at the Legislative Quarters, Port Harcourt, during a meeting of 26 lawmakers currently constituting membership of the 32-member assembly.
The decision to continue the impeachment proceeding is said to have been endorsed by all 26 members who were also part of the signatories to the earlier notice announced last week.
Tribune Online gathered that four members of the Assembly, Barile Nwakoh (Khana 1), Emilia Amadi (Obio/Akpor II), Sylvanus Enyinna Nwankwo (Omuma) and Peter Abbey (Degema), had earlier urged their colleagues to rescind the impeachment move and seek a political end to the crisis also supported the latest decision to continue the impeachment process.
They explained that their latest decision was because Fubara is “incorrigible,” urging Rivers people to “understand that the impeachment process is the best way to go at this point.
“We are using this medium to call on Mr Speaker (Martin Amaewhule) to allow the constitutional process to proceed unhindered,” they said.
