Netizens across social media have reacted with excitement following the Recording Academy’s decision to honour Afrobeat pioneer Fela Anikulapo-Kuti with a Lifetime Achievement Award at the 2026 Grammy Awards.
Since the announcement via their website on Friday, reactions have continued to pour in across social media, with many Nigerians and music lovers worldwide describing the recognition as “well deserved,” “long overdue,” and a fitting tribute to Fela Anikulapo Kuti’s enduring global influence.
The Recording Academy, in a statement released on its website, said, “On January 31, 2026, we are honouring this year’s Special Merit Award recipients, including Fela Kuti, with a Recording Academy Lifetime Achievement Award.”
Fela, who died in 1997, will be honoured alongside global music icons Whitney Houston, Chaka Khan, Cher, Paul Simon and Carlos Santana, all recognised for lifetime achievements and cultural impact.

According to the Academy, the Lifetime Achievement Award is presented by vote of its National Trustees to performers who, during their lifetime, “have made creative contributions of outstanding artistic significance to the field of recording.”
Describing Fela, the Academy called him, “An architect of Afrobeat, honoured for a lifetime of influence.
“Fela Kuti was a Nigerian musician, producer, arranger, political radical, and activist who created Afrobeat in the 1960s by combining funk, jazz, salsa, calypso, and traditional Nigerian rhythms.
“His revolutionary music and sociopolitical activism brought him into conflict with successive Nigerian military regimes and shaped modern Nigerian Afrobeats, inspiring artists such as Beyoncé, Paul McCartney, and Thom Yorke.
“His legacy continues through his family, the Kalakuta Museum, and the New Afrika Shrine.”
Fela’s son, Femi Anikulapo-Kuti, also acknowledged the honour by reposting the announcement on his social media pages, while netizens flooded X, Instagram, Facebook and others with tributes that framed the Grammy recognition as overdue validation of Fela’s impact.
Reacting to the news on X, @EstherOfGrace wrote, “A legend finally getting global acknowledgement. Before Afrobeats was global, there was Fela.”
Another user, @contactsummah, described the honour as a lesson in patience, saying, “This is what we call work now and enjoy later. Congratulations to the family.”
Others focused on Fela’s enduring relevance, with @bodyof_africa posting, “Daddy will forever be a living icon in Afrobeat and to the world.”
On Instagram, voltages_king wrote that Fela’s music kept him “closer to the motherland than I ever imagined,” adding, “Kalakuta President for a reason.”
Similarly, @ime.writes described Fela as “one of the greatest thought leaders in human history,” adding that Afrobeat is “more than hypnotic polyrhythms, it is a philosophy.”
Another Instagram user, @drsim7, wrote, “Well deserved and way overdue! We welcome it.”
While Facebook user Felix Odigie described Fela as “an award in life and death,” recounting how the late musician’s song Mr Follow Follow helped him heal from a personal betrayal, adding that Fela was “an award sent by God to mankind.”
Prince Ajibulu wrote, “Baba Fela deserves the award. Congratulations to his family, Nigerian and global fans, and Nigeria at large.”
Gabriel Adeyemo added, “Fela is the greatest musician of all time from Africa. Baba truly deserves every award.”
Nearly three decades after his passing, Fela Kuti’s Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award not only cements his status as a global music legend but also validates the enduring impact of his revolutionary sound and activism.
As netizens and fans celebrate the recognition, it serves as a reminder that his music, philosophy, and fight for justice continue to resonate across generations, inspiring Afrobeat artists and global audiences alike.
