The House of Representatives on Thursday called for the establishment of campuses of the Nigeria Police Academy, Wudil, Kano State, in all six geo-political zones of the country, in line with the Nigeria Police Academy (Establishment) Act, 2021.
Adopting a motion sponsored by Kalejaiye Adeboye Paul (APC, Lagos), the House urged President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to recognise the importance of expanding the Academy and to approve the recommendations of its Governing Council.
The lawmakers also mandated the Governing Council to immediately begin implementing the provisions of the Act by transforming the institution into a multi-campus university to enhance police training, security, and national development.
Additionally, the House called on the National Universities Commission (NUC) to consider proposals from the Governing Council to facilitate the establishment of more campuses, thereby increasing the Academy’s reach and capacity.
To support the move, the House directed its Committees on Police Institutions, Police Affairs, University Education, and Appropriations to collaborate with the Academy’s Governing Council to ensure necessary legislative and budgetary backing for the expansion.
While leading the debate, Kalejaiye noted that the Nigeria Police Academy Act of 2021 empowers the institution to operate as a degree-awarding body and provides for its development and expansion nationwide.
It said section 3 of the Act empowers the Academy, under the oversight of its Governing Council, to “establish such campuses, colleges, faculties, institutions, schools, and units within the Academy as may be necessary or desirable, subject to the approval of the National Universities Commission.
He said despite the clear provisions of the Act, the Nigeria Police Academy continues to operate only a single campus in Wudil, Kano State, thereby limiting access and opportunities to quality police training across the country.
He said the establishment of additional campuses in each geopolitical zone will promote inclusiveness and strengthen the capacity of the Nigeria Police Academy to train officers effectively;
