Subject: Acknowledgment of Your Statement on the Sharia Court Controversy and Call for Further Action
Your Excellency,
On behalf of YSDM-USA, a global organization dedicated to preserving the peace, unity, and cultural heritage of Yorubaland, we address you as proud sons and daughters of Yoruba land. We wish to express our appreciation and commendation for your recent press release regarding the proposed inauguration of a Sharia Court in Oyo Town. Your firm commitment to upholding the Nigerian Constitution and ensuring strict adherence to the rule of law exemplifies the exceptional leadership we hold in high regard.
We particularly applaud your declaration that “our law is the constitution of Nigeria, which is what I swore to uphold” and your assurance that any initiatives outside the legal framework will face your firm resistance. Your firm stance resonates strongly with the values of justice, equity, and the preservation of cultural harmony that we advocate for as a movement.
However, we humbly seek to understand Your Excellency’s position further regarding the broader implications of this event on the cultural and ancestral heritage of Oyo Town, a revered symbol of Yoruba tradition and unity.
• As the Executive Governor of Oyo State, how do you plan to ensure that future attempts to introduce potentially divisive initiatives are proactively addressed to prevent tensions among our multi-religious and multi-ethnic communities?
• As the custodian of the people’s trust, what measures will your administration take to safeguard the cultural and ancestral sanctity of Oyo Town and Yorubaland at large?
While we appreciate the indefinite postponement of the proposed Sharia Court inauguration, the concerns surrounding this issue remain significant. The Yoruba people, renowned for their peaceful coexistence and rich cultural diversity, are deeply protective of their ancestral heritage. We strongly believe that any actions that could disrupt this harmony warrant a robust and transparent process of consultation and scrutiny.
We kindly urge Your Excellency to further engage relevant stakeholders, including traditional rulers, community leaders, and representatives of diverse religious groups, to ensure a collaborative approach to preserving the unity and heritage of our land.
Once again, we appreciate your swift response and commitment to upholding justice and constitutional integrity. We trust in your continued efforts to promote peace and prosperity for all residents of Oyo State.
