A coalition of northern politicians, operating under the banner of Team New Nigeria (TNN), has announced its intention to establish a new political party to challenge President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration in the 2027 elections.
The announcement was made by TNN’s national president, Modibbo Yakubun Farakwai, during the unveiling of the organisation’s harmonisation committee in Kano.
Farakwai cited their disillusionment with the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), which they had previously supported during its victorious campaign against the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in 2015. He expressed regret for their role in elevating the APC to power, highlighting the administration’s failure to tackle pressing issues afflicting the nation.
He lamented that the APC has drastically underperformed in all areas, stating, “There is insecurity and hunger, and the president is indifferent to the plight of Nigerians.
“It is abundantly clear that the government has failed on nearly every front; it has proven incapable of securing the nation’s internal environment. Insecurity is rampant. Lawlessness is spiralling out of control throughout the country.
“There is widespread poverty and rising unemployment across the nation. The quality of social services has significantly deteriorated, and our socio-economic infrastructure is in a state of irrevocable decline.
“We are witnessing an unprecedented drop in the standard of living, coupled with an astronomical rise in living costs. In short, nothing is functioning as it should; we have become a nation where nothing works at all.”
The coalition has begun formal steps to establish the new party, having submitted its constitution, manifesto, logo, and flag to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) for approval.
Farakwai urged INEC to process their registration with impartiality, asserting TNN’s commitment to reshaping Nigeria’s political landscape.
He reaffirmed the group’s determination to create a “true democratic Nigeria” and to provide a credible alternative to the current political establishment.
