Godwin Emefiele is not supposed to end his tenure as Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria as a captive to be forcefully fleeced by a consortium of roughnecks. He is supposed to retire from the CBN as celebrated hero and then move into the arcane world of international finance.
Emefiele was to spend his remaining lifetime in a comfort guaranteed by payments and stock options from Zenith Bank where he served and rounded off his banking career as Group Managing Director.
So how did Emefiele end up now as a captive held against the orders of court to be brutalized by lesser men?
Godwin Emefiele may have stepped out of line or abused his privileges as CBN governor. But he is not the first. The Central Bank of Nigeria like every public institution in Nigeria has suffered from a long line of abuse from it’s governors. But Godwin Emefiele is the first to suffer such public humiliation from brigands posing as security agents.
We remember vividly Modibo Sannusi threatening Chukwuma Soludo his predecessor, that if he had a mind to it, Soludo would be rotting in jail for his wanton crime at the CBN.
We recall also the long convoy of pick-up trucks crossing the desert from Port Sudan to Tchad and into Nigeria, ending up as part of the bulging war arsenal of Boko Haram at the time. The war armament was believed to have been ordered and paid for with state funds by a top operative of the Central Bank who was never held to account.
We remember the intensity of the resurgence of Boko Haram at the time as they lobbed tonnes of bombs at Nigerian soldiers and cash at communities in the theatre of war. They were also paying treacherous soldiers to betray their fellow fighters and their fatherland. Nigerian cash was being expended to kill Nigerians and SSS did not arrest or prosecute anybody.
Every intelligence agency in the world knew that the money for the weapons and the resurgence operations were coming from a certain Central Bank. But nobody was ever charged.
The Agencies also had good intelligence that the subversion was funded from the Bank and planned by the trio of the Central Bank governor at the time with the enfant terrible of Nigerian politics, el-Rufa’i and Muhammadu Jega, then INEC Chairman. El-Rufai was the chief of the operation to defeat Jonathan and bring in Muhammadu Buhari. Central Bank cash funded the conspiracy. The resurgence of Islamism and recruitment of fighters from the Sahel into Nigeria was central to the realization of the goal of state capture.
None of these persons have ever been questioned or detained on these operations which were known and sometimes aided by the security agencies. These secret operations were funded from the Bank with billions in naira and dollars to subvert the Nigerian state. Nobody has ever been held to account.
So why is Emefiele in detention by the DSS against the order of court. Is it for obeying the president by providing cash to fund the Grand Fulani Project ordered by Muhammadu Buhari? Why is Godwin Emefiele in detention for providing cash to aid Aliko Dangote to build a refinery while Dangote himself, the receiver if the cash, sleeps peacefully on his bed? Why is Emefiele held for carrying the wishes of Mamman Daura on the instructions of President Buhari while all these partners in crime roam free?
Why is Yusuf Bichi, director of SSS disobeying the courts and beating up on Godwin Emefiele in an open and violent disobedience of court and in brazen determination to force a confession and capitulation from him? The theft of Nigeria’s wealth must not go unpunished but Yusuf Bichi must not be allowed to implement his own version of justice based on jaundiced ethnic choices.
Yusuf Bichi is leveraging on his not so secret friendship with Bola Tinubu to bear down on Emefiele and beat him out of whatever little money he has made from doing the secret and illegal biddings of his master Buhari. He is not taking Buhari and his ethnic henchmen to court for ordering the theft of Nigeria’s money to implement an ethnic agenda. He is not beating on Buhari and his ethnic cronies for the bulk of the money he knows was taken from the bank to aid Dangote Refinery or the Grand Fulani Project. Receivers of stolen wealth we know, are equally guilty. Any honest cop wanting to solve a crime must take in the fences, receivers of stolen goods
It should matter to a distracted nation now that Godwin Emefiele was an operative of government taking orders from higher authority? Why are the beneficiaries of Emefiele’s supposed crimes not charged along with him by the SSS? And why will the SSS be allowed to take over the prosecution of financial crime from the EFCC?
Is it not obvious to the world that Yusuf Bichi and Bola Tinubu in collaboration, are implementing a long held vendetta against Godwin Emefiele? Until everyone involved in the crime is arrested and prosecuted along with Godwin Emefiele, Yusuf Bichi and Bola Tinubu are pursuing a personal agenda to scourge and bludgeon Godwin Emefiele and strip him of his wealth and integrity.
It is for this reason that whatever Bola Tinubu and Yusuf Bichi do now against Godwin Emefiele cannot stand for justice. They are just beating up on a helpless man against the orders of court and against the public’s perception of justice. All of these too shall pass and true justice will be done in the end.
The world wants to see the higher authority who gave approvals and ordered transfer of monies charged along with Godwin Emefiele. The world also wants to see all the participants and beneficiaries of crime brought to justice. Anything less than that will not be justice but vendetta. The governor of the Central Bank was obviously not disobeying the orders of the President and Commander in Chief and there are beneficiaries of the alleged crime roaming free.
There’s this sneaky hunch that Godwin Emefiele will laugh last after his tribulation.
