BREAKING: Details Emerge As Niger Coup Leaders Refuse To Let Senior U.S. Diplomat Meet With Nation’s President

A high-ranking U.S. diplomat has revealed that leaders of the coup in Niger declined her request to meet with the country’s democratically elected president, who she says is effectively under house arrest…
Acting Deputy Secretary of State Victoria Nuland also stated that the coup leaders were unresponsive to U.S. pressure to restore civilian rule in the nation.
Nuland spoke after a meeting with military leaders of the takeover in Niger’s capital, Niamey. She stressed the importance of returning democracy and warned that if this does not happen, the U.S. could legally cut off most of its assistance, including military aid.
The coup has resulted in President Mohamed Bazoum being detained along with his family. The coup leaders have closed Niger’s airspace, citing threats of foreign attack.
The situation has escalated regional tensions, with West African leaders discussing their next steps. The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) had set a deadline for the coup leaders to reinstate the president, warning of potential military intervention if their demands weren’t met.
Nuland also indicated that the coup leaders rejected the idea of inviting Russian mercenaries from the Wagner Group into the country, a move that has been observed in other unstable West African nations.
The coup has raised concerns about the fight against extremism in the Sahel region, where groups linked to al-Qaida and the Islamic State are active. Niger had been a key counterterrorism partner in the region. France and Western countries are also closely watching the situation.
As the situation unfolds, there is uncertainty about the future of both French and U.S. military presence in Niger.
