Dr. Wumi Akintide
I totally disagree with the naive statement by Governor Akeredolu that no king has right to claim paramountcy. What? Tell me about it? The simple definition of the word “Paramount” I found in Webster Dictionary is supreme or more powerful.
Is Akeredolu now saying that a grade A or B or C or D Oba commands the same power and influence under the Law? That is simply absurd.
I won’t for the purposes of comparison equate the Awujale with the Dagburewe of Idowa or the Iralepo with the Deji or the Olowo with Ojomo l’Uda of Ijebu Owo.
The Olowo is known to be superior to the Ojomo l’Uda or the Oloba of Uso and their remuneration reflect the difference in their status and influence. Does it not? I don’t know what Akeredolu is talking about?
Akeredolu should go tell that to the Sultan of Sokoto, the Shehu of Bornu, the Emir of Kano or the Tor Tiv, the Emir of Ilorin or the Ohinoyi the Attah of Igbira Land.
He should go tell that to the Omo N’Oba N’Edo Uku Akpolokpolo the Oba of Benin, or the Olu of Warri or the Obi of Onitsha or the Amayannabo of Buguma or the Jaja of Opobo or Oba Kukruaga of Agbagada or Ijaw Arogbo or Oba Olugbo of Ugbo Nla or the Orodje of Okpe.
He should go tell that to the Oonirisa Okirikiribiti Jigbini bi Ate Akun or the Alaafin of Oyo Iku Baba Yeye or the Soun of Ogbomosho or the Oluwo of Iwo or the Alake of Abeokuta or the Awujale or the Akarigbo of Ijebu- Remo or even the Olubadan of Ibadan or the Ataoja of Oshogbo or the the Owa Obokun of Ijesha or the Timi of Ede who all know their status and would vehemently disagree with Akeredolu’s statement
Those are not first class Obas like the Olowo, the Deji of Akure the Osemawe of Ondo that Akeredolu has been insulting by equating them to minor Obas of Grade B, D, C status in their domains in the name of partisan politics. If you are a Grade D Oba and you support the Government in power you can be upgraded overnight over and above the paramount ruler in your Local Government.
If all Obas are equal why not make all of them first class Obas regardless of their traditional status and seniority from the Dawn of our History?
Queen Elizabeth was lucky she did not have to deal with politicians like Akeredolu. She would long have been demoted to teach her a lesson in the animal farm kind of anarchy we have in Nigeria where a power- drunk Ganduje in Kano was more than happy to defrock Lamido Sanusi a first class brain and former Governor of Central Bank who was humiliated and victimized by an individual never in the same class with him but for the fact that one is Governor and the other was not.
Akeredolu should go tell that to the Oore of Otun, the Ewi of Ado and the Elekole of Ikole and the Ogoga of Ikere that all Obas are equal.
If he had talked that nonsense to Alaafin Adeyemi the Second or Deji Afunbiowo Adesida the First or the Alaaye of Efon Oba Adeniran Atapupa or Owa of Idanre Oba Arubiefin Aroloye the First, he could be cursed and charmed to bark himself to death like a dog like young Chief Bode Thomas when he had disrespected the Alaafin. The traditional rulers of today are so weak and powerless that some of their Governors walk all over them as their master or big boss.
That was total nonsense.
I praise the Governor when he does something right and I criticize and lambast him when I think he is wrong. He is not God and he is occupying a very transient position that would not last forever.
The politicians like feckless and power-drunk Akeredolu have insulted and politicized our traditional institutions thru proliferation of Chieftaincy titles for political patronage.
