Although his doctors advised him to consider doing the surgical operation to correct a fracture on his right femur (thigh bone) abroad, the Vice President, Prof. Yemi Osinbajo insisted on using a Nigerian hospital and medical experts for the procedure.
According to sources close to Duchess International Hospital where the operation took place on Saturday, some of the government and private practice doctors of the Vice President made the suggestion because the going abroad option is often usually considered by such class of patients and at times the option could also seem more seamless.
But one of the doctors who coordinated the whole operation, Dr. Yemi Onabowale, who is the founder of the Reddington Hospital, was quoted to have said “the VP was clear that he had confidence in Nigerian doctors both at home and abroad and would prefer they handle the operation.”
His preference to have the surgery done in Nigeria is also being regarded as a major boost for the government’s often stated objective of a reversed medical tourism as some voices in the healthcare sector have expressed excitement at Prof Osinbajo’s choice.
He was also said to have argued that doing the operation in Nigeria would not only encourage Nigerian doctors who are among the best anywhere in the world, but it would also help develop the capacity here in Nigeria.

WHY I HAD SURGERY IN NIGERIA — VP Osinbajo
July 18, 2022
When a couple of days ago I first read the story of how Prof Yemi Osinbajo had cast his body at the mercy of a phalanx of the best Orthopaedic Surgeons that Yorubaland could muster, I started to mentally prepare a comical response to what was clearly an aberration.
How can?
Have we, the country Nigeria, finally run out of money?
Can the CBN and the Minister of Finance confirm this?
Has our Pastor and loyal Vice President been so underpaid that he couldn’t save enough for what can only be described as mandatory Medical Tourism? This is what status is all about. When you are there, you are there! You know it and you should never forget that.
Remember that we have stopped counting when it comes to his boss GMB. And heaven did not fall, did it?
Whether the Vee-Pee has been on the take or not, how could the many beneficiaries of his Executive munifiscence sit back and allow him let himself to be cut open in a Nigerian hospital? What if NEPA takes light while he is under anaesthesia? I can only imagine the top level meeting where the “stakeholders”, (how I love that word, that classification), would argue with the cerebral professor. We have your image to protect for goodness sake! . And ours too! This has long ceased to be personal.
I had therefore intended to first praise Osinbajo for seemingly borrowing from the #PeterObi playbook by publicly avoiding wastefulness.
My next point would have been to warn him that there may be adverse consequences. Why you may ask.
Simple. . For disloyally seeking to draw a serious contrast between himself and the profligate Buhari in matters of Health. Enemies in Aso Rock and outside in other corridors of power around could rightly say, “Santa! What the hell were you trying to prove?” I am not involved but I am not too stupid not to know that we have more than enough time left in this tenure to get Osinbajo impeached for the above baseless offences. The rofo-rofo that just played out in Ibadan, Oyo State, is definitely minor league.
Like I said, these are the things that I had wanted to say to and about our Vee-Pee, but didn’t.
AND NOW THIS!
Osinbajo is explaing, (to who exactly?),
“WHY I HAD SURGERY IN NIGERIA”
Is he under pressure already, just like I had privately predicted?
Nigerians are a funny lot. For the past seven odd years we have been railing against our President for abandoning our health care institutions and running off to Europe each time he has a headache or an ear infection. Now somebody who has elected to stay here and take his chances among his own people, has to offer an explanation? . Is that it?
Haba!
This country don tire me well well.

Ay Executive
Oduche Azih captured it all but we owe no one any apology but love him more for doing what he preaches and rekindles a big hope to our health sector unlike Emilokan of jagajga kingdom and his likes
