Oyewale Tomori in the now viral lecture to an Abuja Summit on the way we are in Nigeria is my biological Uncle. He is right only up to a point.
The picture of his Utopia Nigeria – UT he romantically revered was that solely of the Yoruba Nation. It was not, and it has not been that of the now so-called Nigeria.
The ethos of the Omoluabi world of the Yorubas were never imbibed nor assimilated by all others across the so-called territory that was defined as Nigeria.
In fact the Yoruba modality and way of life were pointedly rejected by all others. Awolowo was called out negatively for seeking to extend his ideas Eastwards and Northwards. Eventually, he was tagged the Best President, Nigeria never wanted by Odumegwu Ojukwu.
I remember, the Yoruba efforts at writing petitions to call out wrongdoers were also shouted down by the rest of Nigeria. While others covered up the misconduct by their kinsmen in the Federal Public Service, the Yorubas were derided as not being loving of themselves. So the petition writing by the Yorubas cooled down over the years.
But if wrongdoers are not called out and punished, how does vaccines for Covid become well administered. The famous NDDC probe and the fainted Professor has been buried.
The election rigging protests by Ekiti people in 1983 was taken for stupidity by mainstream Nigeria. The rest of Nigeria derided Ekiti people for rejecting Omoboriowo, who was perceived to have rigged out Ajasin.
I remember that it was just one outing by Shonekan on official Visit to Akure, Ondo State and was booed for the Abacha people to discover that an Egba to replace another Egba in MKO Abiola was not the Yoruba way. Shonekan had to be shooed off.
Up till now, have Yorubas accepted Obasanjo with his Basic Secondary education, when the choice ought have been for the Yale University educated Olu Falae? Nigeria put down the Yorubas and annoited Obasanjo. The game of mediocrity that my Uncle cried about subsists till date.
The Yorubas have been conscripted and emasculated in Nigeria. It is why the quest for separation has been so strident. Yorubas are seeking liberation so that they can be free to blossom for their own good or for their own whatever.
That’s what self determination is about. The Yorubas shall be free. We shall reconnect with the our innate character as romanticised by my Oyewale Tomori.
Perhaps, others may with time clone the outcome of our example, as it was during the period 1954 to 1966.
Let the rest of Nigeria also blossom in their own ways. We shall be better off as neighbours.
A flag, an anthem, may be currency and travel passport shall be the Common denominator eventually.
