Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association has warned that a cow could cost N2 million if the anti-grazing bill is passed into law in Lagos State.
In another twist by Miyetti Allah in their ongoing campaign to overturn the decision of the southern states to stop open grazing in their states which have led to strife, kidnappings, rape, Killings and the destruction of farms and other properties of the indigenous people by Fulani herdsmen, they have turned to subtle threats and blackmail.
The most recent of such efforts came from the Zonal Secretary of Myetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association in the South West, Meikudi Usman, who said that cows may cost 2m naira. He said this during a one-day public hearing organised by the Lagos State House of Assembly.
Usman said rearing cows openly is cheaper than keeping them in one place (Ranching).
He urged the Lagos State government to assist the cow breeders.
He also pleaded with Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu administration to subsidise the cost of raising the cattle in one location.
“If cattle are bred in one place, the price could go up to about N2 million each.
“A Fulani man moves from one place to another to ply his trade, but we have some bad eggs that are causing trouble.”
“The government should allow us to talk to our people that they don’t want our cows to destroy people’s farmland.
“We agreed with some local chiefs in other states that anyone who wants to rear cows in a location should register and should indicate when he is leaving.
“We have met with stakeholders in Ekiti, Ondo and even Oyo states and we reached agreements with them,” he said.
Alhaji Alabi Bamidele Kazeem, the Chairman of Lagos State Butchers Association of Lagos State, also argued that “rearing animals in one location could be expensive”.
My question is, why is Miyetti Allah hell bent on nomadic cattle rearing? It’s definitely not because of the price. We’ve heard threats from their leadership, that they will not obey the anti grazing laws of the southern states. They blocked their tomatoes and onions from being brought to the south, they’ve gone on air to say that every land in Nigeria belongs to all, therefore, no one can stop them. Their life patron Mr. Buhari through his Sharia attorney general, Malami, tried to block the anti grazing laws, then Mr. Buhari wants a review of the land use act as it affects the grazing routes of the 1960s.
So, what precisely is the agenda? Why can’t these people respect the wishes of others? Grazing has been going on in the south forever with no problem whatsoever, not until terrorists infiltrated the ranks of the real herders, thereby terrorizing the people of the south, chasing them away from their farms, killing, maiming, raping, and kidnapping them for ransom which directly resulted in their anti grazing laws.
Why is it that whenever the southern governors attempt to do what they are elected to do, one of which is to secure the lives and properties of their citizens, which the federal government, under a Fulani man has failed to do, these people always have a problem with it. When Hisbah police was created up north for sharia law, the south accepted their decision and choice even though most southerners in the those states are Christians, but when it was the turn of Amotekun’s creation, their was a problem, southern states controlling their VAT collections is a problem, yet, they are in control of majority of federal appointments.
Could it just be true that the agenda is not just to Fulanize, and, or to Islamize Nigeria, but to control the wealth of the indigenous people of the south?
The time for the north to pull it’s weight by governing for their people and not just for the elites is now, they need to stop using religion to keep our people up north in perpetual backwardness. Their is so much talent in every aspect in the north, let’s take athletics for instance, just like the Kalenjin of Kenya and the Ethiopians are great distance runners that have, and continue to conquer the world in those sporting events. Given the right environment and education, there is absolutely nothing between the north and the south mentally and academically.
The northern leaders need to stop acting like they are leeches and parasites to the rest of Nigeria because they shouldn’t be, they have what it takes to develop the north if only they will stop being lazy and being dependent on the government and the rest of the nation and start thinking outside the box to develop their region.
Instead of Miyetti Allah to continue whining, their bullying and attempted bullying, they should divert their energy and connections to lobby the government to help establish 21st century grazing ranches across the northern region and make ithem the envy of the world. It will surely serve them and Nigeria very well.
They should also get the nomads into other trades and professions by establishing trade institutions and more schools for the benefits of the north and Nigeria as a whole.
They must remember if cows become too expensive to afford, people will find other alternatives which may affect adversely affect the cow business.
