Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has said he will make one last attempt at Nigeria’s presidency in 2027, ruling out any future ambition beyond that election.

Atiku made the declaration during an interview on Arise Television, where he spoke on his long-standing presidential bids and plans ahead of the next general election.
“The 2027 election will be my last outing,” he said.
The former vice president, who has been in the presidential race since 1992, was asked why Nigerians should still trust him with power after several attempts and considering his age.
In his response, Atiku argued that Nigeria’s main problem remains poor leadership, insisting that experience at the top makes a difference in governance.
“There is a clear and stark difference, take the cases of state governors in a number of states being headed by relatively young people and failing woefully simply because at the apex, they do not have capable and experienced president to guide them and to give them the benefit of his experience,” he said.
“That’s why we have been having a number of woeful leadership in a number of states because they are being headed by inexperienced young men.”
Atiku also pointed to the administration of former President Goodluck Jonathan, saying inexperience at the centre contributed to governance challenges during that period.
Despite his stance, he stressed the need to groom younger leaders, calling for deliberate leadership training to prepare the next generation for national responsibility.
He added that Nigeria must invest in building capable leaders who can combine experience with effective decision-making.
