Israeli President Isaac Herzog has insisted that Israel did not force Donald Trump into conflict with Iran or dictate U.S. military action as hostilities continue between Washington, Tel Aviv and Tehran.
In remarks on Wednesday, Herzog rejected suggestions that Israeli leaders persuaded the United States to launch strikes against Iran, stressing that the decision was made independently by Trump.
“Israel does not dictate to President Trump anything, and Israel does not drag America into a war, God forbid,” he said in an interview with CBS.
He described the U.S. action as the result of Trump’s own “clear considerations and professional decision-making process,” adding that Israel’s role stemmed from its position as a close ally rather than as a driving force behind the conflict.
Herzog’s comments came amid ongoing joint U.S.–Israeli military strikes on Iranian targets and repeated Iranian counterattacks across the region. T
The conflict, which began with coordinated strikes on Iran last Saturday, has sparked international debate over the motives and dynamics of the U.S.–Israel partnership.
The president’s statement also addressed public perceptions in the United States, where the war’s popularity remains mixed.
Herzog acknowledged that many Americans may not fully understand the complexities of the conflict, noting that comparisons to other wars could cloud public view.
While emphasising Israel’s support for U.S. objectives, Herzog made clear that the strategic decisions leading to military engagement were made independently by Washington, not under Israeli pressure.
His intervention is part of broader efforts by leaders in both nations to frame the conflict as a response to perceived threats from Iran rather than the result of external influence over U.S. policy.
