Members of the Islamic Movement in Nigeria (IMN) have taken to the streets in several northern states to protest the killing of Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.
The demonstrators, primarily from the Shiite sect, are expressing their outrage following reports that the long-serving Iranian leader was killed during a joint military operation by the United States and Israel.
The protests, which have been reported in cities such as Kano, Kaduna, and the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja, saw participants carrying portraits of the late Ayatollah.
They chanted slogans against the United States and Israel, condemning the airstrikes that targeted Khamenei’s compound in Tehran on Saturday.
The protesters described the killing as an act of “global arrogance” and a direct attack on the Shiite faith worldwide.
Khamenei, who had been at the helm of Iran’s leadership since 1989, was a central figure for Shiite Muslims across the globe. His death was officially confirmed by Iranian state media early Sunday morning, following an announcement by U.S. President Donald Trump.
The Iranian government has since declared 40 days of national mourning, a sentiment that is now being echoed by his followers in Nigeria.
The Nigerian government has called for calm and urged all international parties to pursue dialogue rather than further military action.
However, the IMN leaders have maintained that the “blood of the martyrs” will not go in vain, sparking concerns about potential domestic instability.
