I regret holding Obasanjo in high esteem — Atiku’s aide

Paul Ibe, Media Adviser to former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, says he regrets his past admiration for former President Olusegun Obasanjo.

The remark comes following the resurfacing of a long-running feud between Obasanjo and Atiku.

On Friday, Obasanjo described his decision to pick Atiku as his running mate in the 1999 presidential election as the biggest mistake of his presidency.

The ex-president stated this during a fireside conversation with veteran entertainer and activist Charles Oputa, popularly known as Charly Boy in Lagos.

“The man I picked as my running mate, my number two. If I had known him as I came to know him later, I would not have picked him,” Obasanjo said.

In a Facebook post on Sunday, Ibe urged Nigerians to read the book titled, “Bitter-Sweet: My Life with Obasanjo“, a 2008 memoir by the ex-president’s first wife, Oluremi Obasanjo.

The ex-VP’s aide described the book as “a mirror into the controversial life of the man who was privileged to rule Nigeria twice — as a military head of state and civilian president.”

Ibe quoted the 130-page memoir, published by Diamond Publications in 2008, as exposing “the stark contrast between the former leader’s public facade of discipline and his troubled, authoritarian private life.”

He alleged that Oluremi Obasanjo characterised her former husband as “a violent and unrepentant wife-basher,” and detailed “intense emotional trauma and physical abuse she allegedly suffered during their marriage.”

Ibe further claimed the book contained “allegation of his lack of sexual discipline,” which he said “were confirmed by his son, who alleged that the father slept with his wife.”

“Lack of sexual discipline, incestuous affairs and domestic violence are extreme manifestations of moral bankruptcy,” Ibe stated.

“Yet this is the same man who has made a trade of pointing accusing fingers at others.”

Ibe noted, “If I knew the things that I now know about Obasanjo, I would not have held him in very high esteem like I had done in the past.

“His hypocrisy, high handedness and double standard reeks to high heaven.”
