Since 2023, courts in Nigeria have become sources of emotional titillation and entertainment. It’s a very national performance and grand in its various renditions, connecting all the courts in the land.
It’s a vaudeville performance in courts spread across the land, the latest now being in Lokoja, each court playing its own macabre role but all performing for a single national purpose: To remove Peter Obi from the presidential ballot in 2027.
It’s more like the early jazz ensembles of the post slavery era in America, each performer bringing their home made instruments to play, the ensemble itself having no rehearsals but each trying to fit into a rhythm without a voice accompaniment but all working to achieve a rhythm and a harmonic end. That’s how the courts at different levels are functioning now in Nigeria.
In the very tall ambition to make Bola Tinubu the only candidate of the presidential election in 2027, the entire judiciary and court system has been forced to play to an unrehearsed harmony, trudging an unbeaten track and forcing the entire country into watching and listening to an ensemble that is both novel and very unpleasant. Because the entire interest of the actors is personal gain, the ensembles have been without harmony, judges have been outlandish and outdoing one another in giving rulings and judgements completely unrelated to cases in their courts. Many judges are falling over themselves to have the dishonour of being the ones to remove Peter Obi from the Presidential ballot.
The entire legal establishment are enmeshed in a massive conspiracy against one man, Peter Obi, each judge pursuing him for the final kill in order to win the big prize of ignominy.
Bola Tinubu, having no self-belief or values and no standards in upbringing or behaviour and therefore no obligation to society or anyone in both conduct or performance, he is ready to reduce the entire country to a ravaged, devastated and desolate land without a care. He pays heed to no standards of behaviour, so he has no depths to which he cannot sink, taking the country along with his jaded mind. His cynicism has no bottom to which it cannot sink.
The entire judiciary and court system appears to have no standards to submit to. Every judge is on the highway to money and a life of desiccated luxury. Because of this quest, there are no rules that cannot be violated, no pronouncements that a judge cannot make, whether it relates to the matter before him or not. There’s no depth of infamy the Nigerian court cannot sink, no bizzare or uncoordinated ruling they cannot give.
Judges are lounging across to nullify pronouncement and judgements of the supreme Court and ordering stays to higher court orders. There are no falsifications that a Nigerian judge cannot dignify with a court order ex-parte or inter-parte. This is the true enactment of the Hobbesian order, the eventual order and rendering of Carthage after the Roman siege and devastation.
Bola Tinubu is determined to bring Nigeria down to the Hobbesian order, which demands the devastation of the country at all costs if he does not have the presidency. You see, Tinubu has never been subjected to any standards of discipline, social conduct or behavior and has no family history or recognized peer influence to remind him of learned values growing up. He has no quality to his name and no standards associate with his character.
Bola Tinubu and the APC must be the most shameless entities in Nigeria and Africa today for their demonstrated fear of one man, Peter Obi. How can the president of the biggest country in Africa commanding the entire forces in Nigeria and the political party backing him be so morbidly afraid of one unarmed man without an army or deadly force backing him? How can Bola Tinubu and the APC be so ridiculously cowardly as to be chasing one man from party to party, determined that he must not be allowed to be in the ballot of an election? Above all else, how can they believe that the entire nation will let him get away with chasing their preferred candidate away from the election? Has he ever contemplated the consequences of his success or failure.
Tinubu is trying to overpower Nigeria and make himself the ruler and the rule itself a la King Louis, destroying the institutions of state and planting himself as the only power to act as both the leader and the institutions of State, with the ultimate ambition that the state be embodied in him. “L’etat et moi” (I am the state) hollered King Louis XIV.
The judges are outdoing themselves and have become uncontrollable because they are not paying a price for their bad behaviour. The pains they cause, the disruptions they bring to national development and peaceful cohesion, the growing descent to anarchy arising from their bad judgements are all left unpaid for by the judges.
We recall that judges were responsible for the proliferation of armed robberies in the seventies and eighties. When the police apprehend the robbers and take them to courts, they were freed by judges after bribes. The robbers would promptly go back to the police for revenge and kill the policemen who caught them. The police were eventually forced to resort to extra judicial killing of the robbers at the places of arrest or at police stations to avoid the courts and the judges. At a time extra judicial killing became so scandalous and a blight on Nigeria’s criminal justice system.
It is coming close to that now in the political arena where the people will have to take charge of their political affairs without the disruptions of the judges and their courts. This time, the judges will be made to pay for the deaths, hunger, kidnappings and painful disruptions, the dissonance and political instability they aided and abetted in the country.
The law requires that we obey every drunken judge, every crazy man wielding a gavel, every pretender with a purchased and bleached wool on his head. We must, for our own survival now, before the judges destroy the nation, change the narrative, the men and the law. It could be that this time we’ve got serious business to do and a few heads to knock over.
