The United States Mission in Nigeria has opened applications for the 2026 cohort of the EducationUSA Nigeria Opportunity Fund Programme (OFP), offering support to outstanding Nigerian students seeking admission into higher education institutions in the United States.
According to a notice issued by the US Mission, applications opened on June 15 and will close on June 30, 2026.
The programme, administered by EducationUSA Nigeria under the Public Diplomacy Section of the US Mission, is designed to assist academically exceptional Nigerian students with demonstrated leadership potential in pursuing undergraduate and postgraduate studies in the United States.
The mission said the initiative supports access to US higher education while promoting educational exchange and strengthening economic and strategic ties between Nigeria and the United States.
According to the statement, the 2026 edition of the programme aligns with the Freedom 250 celebration, marking 250 years of American leadership, innovation and democratic values.
“Freedom250 marks 250 years of American leadership, innovation and democratic values, and the OFP 2026 cohort will advance these priorities by preparing globally competitive talents aligned with US economic and strategic interests,” the statement said.
The US Mission noted that the programme also reinforces its commitment to lawful and well-managed international student participation in American institutions.
It explained that beneficiaries would be guided on the proper use of student visas and compliance with US immigration regulations.
“The programme reinforces US priorities on secure, lawful and well-managed student participation in US higher education systems, ensuring participants understand and uphold the proper use of student visas and full compliance with US immigration regulations,” it stated.
The mission disclosed that priority consideration would be given to students with outstanding academic records and career aspirations in fields considered critical to US strategic interests.
“Priority consideration will be given to the highest-performing students whose academic profiles and career trajectories align with US strategic interests in STEM, AI and critical emerging technologies,” the statement added.
The Opportunity Fund Programme provides financial assistance for essential application expenses, including standardised test fees, university application fees, and other related costs that may otherwise pose barriers to qualified students.
To be eligible, applicants must demonstrate academic excellence, leadership potential, a strong desire to pursue higher education in the United States, notable achievements, research capability, and a commitment to complying with visa and programme requirements.
The US Mission also emphasised the importance of integrity and accountability among participants.
“Participants are expected to uphold the highest standards of integrity, compliance and accountability, including adherence to all U.S. visa regulations,” it stated.
Interested applicants are required to submit a completed application form, academic transcripts, a personal statement, evidence of achievements, leadership and research experience, as well as other supporting documents before the June 30 deadline.
The programme is expected to provide talented Nigerian students with greater access to educational opportunities in the United States while fostering academic and professional development in key sectors of global importance.
