Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has formally presented Deputy Governor, Dr. Obafemi Hamzat, as the governorship candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) for the next election, with Princess Damilola Sonayon-James unveiled as his running mate.
The announcement signals the next phase of the ruling party’s preparations for the governorship contest and reinforces its succession plan in the state.
Sanwo-Olu made the disclosure in a message shared on his verified X account on Thursday. He described the Hamzat-Sonayon-James ticket as a combination of experience, competence and fresh ideas needed to sustain the development agenda of his administration.
According to the governor, the decision was driven by the need to ensure continuity in governance and preserve the progress recorded across different sectors in Lagos.
“The true test of sustainable governance is the ability to pass the baton to proven hands, guided by minds that see the future clearly,” Sanwo-Olu said.
He added that the choice of the two politicians reflects “the strength, diversity, and future” of Lagos State.
The governor praised Hamzat for his role in the current administration, describing him as a dependable ally who has contributed significantly to policy formulation and implementation over the years.
He said the deputy governor had consistently demonstrated loyalty, commitment and dedication to public service.
“Dr. Obafemi Hamzat has proven himself to be a dedicated public servant, a dependable partner in governance and a steadfast advocate for progress,” Sanwo-Olu stated.
Sanwo-Olu also spoke highly of Sonayon-James, saying her background in sustainability, community development and youth engagement makes her a strong addition to the APC ticket.
He described her as a grassroots politician whose record of service aligns with the aspirations of many residents across the state.
“Joining him as his running mate is Princess Damilola Sonayon-James, a respected leader, sustainability professional, and grassroots champion whose commitment to community development and youth empowerment reflects the aspirations of many Lagosians,” the governor added.
He expressed confidence that the pair has the capacity to consolidate on the achievements of the current administration and expand ongoing development projects.
“Together, they bring the experience, competence, and energy needed to build on our achievements and move Lagos forward,” he said.
As political activities ahead of the governorship election continue to gather momentum, the governor called on APC members, stakeholders and Lagos residents to unite behind the party’s candidates.
“I invite party faithful, stakeholders, and all Lagosians to support this team as we continue our shared mission of building a Greater Lagos,” Sanwo-Olu said.
Hamzat’s emergence as the APC governorship candidate followed the party’s primary election held at its secretariat in Ogba on May 21. He secured 657,917 votes out of the 657,974 accredited votes cast, while his only challenger, Lanre Jim-Kamal, polled one vote.
