A Committee set up to deliberate on constitutional modalities for the establishment of State Police met on Thursday at the Presidential Villa.
Chief of Staff to the President, Honourable Femi Gbajabiamila presided at the session which had Deputy Senate President, Barau Jibrin, Deputy Speaker, House of Representatives, Honourable Benjamin Kalu and the Inspector General of Police, Olatunji Rilwan Disu in attendance.

Speaking with State House correspondents after the meeting, Honourable Gbajabiamila restated the resolve of the Presidency and the National Assembly to seek a common ground towards giving a legal backing to the clamour for State Police.
While he disclosed that the Committee has been meeting in the last four months, the former Speaker of the House of Representatives noted that every constitutional procedures have to be followed to the letter to give legitimacy to the process.
He said: “It’s a special meeting on state police, which we’ve been having over time.
We started deliberations in the last three, four months on how to go about establishment of state police as directed by Mr. President.
“Establishing the state police is not something that you do with a wave of the hand or a snap of a finger.
There’s a lot involved in terms of the constitution and legalities. And thank God now we’ve gained a lot of traction. Hopefully the amendment will come shortly and then the details of the amendment will come after that.
Right now what we’re looking at is the constitutional amendment itself, and then the enabling law will follow thereafter.
“So that’s what we’ve been deliberating on in the last couple of hours. And hopefully we know that there’s a national consensus on the establishment of state police.

“I don’t think there is any debate on that. It is something that the president has wanted and has been talking about for some time since last year, and he will be giving a full report on this meeting and the outcome of this meeting.”
