The African Democratic Congress on 27 February 2026 transformed into a consequential political gathering, in what was billed as a routine strategy meeting of the South-South caucus.
The agenda initially centered on internal coordination and party structure within the zone. However, the tone of the meeting shifted when Rotimi Amaechi rose to announce his intention to contest the presidency in the 2027 general elections.
Addressing party stakeholders from his regional base, he appealed for their solidarity as he prepares for the national stage.
His declaration triggered swift procedural momentum. A motion was tabled to express support for his aspiration. Before moving forward, members were urged to weigh the broader implications of such a stance and ensure that any action reflected the collective mood of the zone. Presiding over the session, John Odigie-Oyegun called for a voice vote.
The response was decisive. A thunderous “Aye” reverberated through the hall, with no audible dissent. The spontaneous applause that followed was widely interpreted as a clear signal of endorsement for Amaechi’s presidential ambition. Still, party leadership moved quickly to temper assumptions.
The National Vice Chairman (South-South), Usani Uguru Usani, clarified that the voice vote was not binding on individual members. According to him, the outcome neither compels uniform political action nor negates the presence of support for other aspirants within the region.
In light of varied interpretations that have since emerged, a precise recounting of events has become necessary. This clarification seeks to protect the integrity of all participants and sustain unity within the caucus as the party braces for the demanding political contests ahead.
