The newly confirmed Inspector-General of Police, Tunji Disu, has inaugurated a special committee to drive the implementation of State Police and shape a new policing vision for the country.
The committee, made up of eight senior members, was unveiled shortly after Disu assumed office as the 23rd indigenous Inspector-General of Police.
The move signals the beginning of concrete steps toward decentralised policing in Nigeria.
Disu’s first official engagement with top officers of the Nigeria Police Force took place on Wednesday.
The meeting followed the approval of his appointment by the Nigeria Police Council.
His confirmation cleared the way for his formal swearing-in by President Bola Tinubu at the Presidential Villa.
Speaking to senior officers, Disu described leadership as a call to duty rather than a symbol of rank.
He said professionalism and accountability must now guide police operations in every command across the country.
The Inspector-General stressed that authority must be exercised with discipline and restraint.
He warned that human rights violations would no longer be tolerated within the Force.
According to him, all Nigerians must be treated with dignity and fairness, regardless of social or political status.
He added that justice and respect for the rule of law must define policing under his leadership.
Disu also announced reforms to strengthen internal monitoring systems.
He ordered that the Public Complaint Unit and the X-Squad be allowed to function with greater independence to ensure transparency and discipline.
On the issue of State Police, the IGP said decentralising police duties would allow state and local authorities to take active roles in safeguarding their communities.
He noted that security challenges vary across regions and require local participation for effective solutions.
Professor Olu Ogunsakin was named chairman of the newly inaugurated eight-man State Police Implementation Committee.
The committee is expected to work out policy frameworks and operational guidelines for the new structure.
