United States lawmakers have introduced a bill alleging widespread persecution of Christians in Nigeria, a move that has sparked diplomatic and policy debate over the country’s security and religious freedom challenges.
The proposed legislation, sponsored in the U.S. Congress, seeks to strengthen oversight of religious freedom conditions in Nigeria and compel closer monitoring of violence linked to faith-based communities.
When asked to react to the bill on Wednesday, Nigeria’s Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, declined to comment.
The minister’s silence comes amid heightened international scrutiny of Nigeria’s security situation and sectarian tensions in parts of the country.
Nigeria has consistently maintained that its security challenges are complex and not driven solely by religion, attributing violence largely to terrorism, banditry, communal clashes and criminal activity rather than state-sponsored persecution of any faith.
Observers say the lack of an immediate response underscores the sensitivity of the issue as Nigeria manages diplomatic relations with the United States and other international partners.
Civil society groups and religious leaders have continued to urge the government to intensify efforts to curb violence affecting both Christian and Muslim communities, particularly in the North-Central and parts of the North-East.
As of press time, the Ministry of Information had not issued an official statement clarifying the Federal Government’s position on the U.S. bill.
