Nigeria and Mali have reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening bilateral relations and addressing regional security threats.
This development came as Nigeria’s Minister of Defence, Mohammed Badaru, paid a courtesy visit to Mali’s Prime Minister, General Abdoulaye Maiga, during his participation in the maiden International Defence and Security Exhibition (BAMEX 2025) in Bamako, Mali.
The visit marked a diplomatic milestone, with Badaru leading the Nigerian delegation at BAMEX 2025—a strategic event aimed at promoting security collaboration and showcasing innovations in defence technology across Africa.
BAMEX 2025 has been established as a vital forum for African nations and international partners to foster dialogue, exchange ideas, and chart common strategies against emerging security challenges facing the continent.
In a statement released to journalists on Friday by the Media Aide to the Minister of Defence, Comrade Mati Ali, Badaru described the Malian reception as “warm and exemplary,” commended Mali’s hospitality, and reaffirmed Nigeria’s readiness to strengthen ties with Mali to enhance defence collaboration and tackle shared security challenges in the region.
The statement quoted Badaru as saying, “I bring the goodwill and warm greetings of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to the Government and people of Mali. Nigeria is committed to deepening our ties and working closely with Mali to tackle challenges that threaten peace in our region.”
Badaru further emphasised that Nigeria regards Mali as a strategic partner, noting that shared security interests make defence collaboration a priority for both nations.
Responding, Maiga expressed deep appreciation for Nigeria’s commitment and participation in BAMEX 2025, describing it as “a testament to our enduring friendship and mutual respect.”
He added, “The Government of Mali values Nigeria’s ongoing support and partnership, especially as we confront various security issues together. Such unity remains critical in safeguarding our nations against current and future threats.”
He also lauded BAMEX 2025 as “an essential platform for the exchange of ideas and innovations in defence, vital for our joint efforts to build resilient security structures in Africa.”
The statement from the Defence Minister’s aide further noted, “As BAMEX 2025 concludes, Nigeria and Mali have signalled a renewed determination to leverage their shared experiences and resources to secure the West African region and beyond.”
The statement added that the meeting witnessed the presence of top military figures from both countries, reinforcing their resolve to build partnerships that enhance security and stability in West Africa.
“The Nigerian delegation included the Director-General of the National Intelligence Agency (NIA), the Director of Operations at Defence Headquarters, and officials from the Nigerian Embassy in Mali, demonstrating Nigeria’s strong representation at this high-profile gathering,” the statement said.
