Russia has called on the United States to comply with international legal standards amid reports of potential American military intervention in Nigeria. Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova stated Friday that Moscow is closely monitoring the situation following President Donald Trump’s announcement that he ordered the Pentagon to develop military options against terrorist groups in the African nation.
Monitoring US Military Planning
During a press briefing in Moscow, Zakharova responded to an Anadolu Agency question by emphasizing Russia’s position on the emerging crisis. “We are closely monitoring this issue and call on all parties involved to strictly comply with international legal norms,” she stated. The comments come after President Trump declared on November 1 that he had directed the Pentagon to prepare options for potential military measures in Nigeria, citing the protection of Christian communities as justification.
Regional Implications and Strategic Positioning
The developments highlight the complex geopolitical landscape where major powers navigate relationships with African nations and former Soviet states.
