A leading governorship aspirant of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Ekiti State, Otunba Emmanuel Fayose, has resigned from the party, accusing its national leadership of betrayal and compromise ahead of the 2026 governorship elections.
The younger brother of former Ekiti Governor Ayodele Fayose, announced his resignation at a press conference in Abuja on Thursday, where he said both he and his supporters could no longer continue in the PDP.
“The decision has been somewhat difficult for us to make as stakeholders of the party in Ekiti State. We are, however, compelled to take it considering the state of affairs within the party,” he declared.
The governorship hopeful alleged that the party’s forthcoming primaries in Ekiti had already been compromised, warning that any candidate produced through such a process may not even be recognised by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
“In view of this, I hereby dissociate myself from this kangaroo arrangement,” he said.
Fayose also alleged that the Acting National Chairman of the PDP, Ambassador Iliya Damagum, and the National Secretary, Senator Samuel Anyanwu, had deliberately undermined the opposition party.
“I have lost hope on the leadership of the party headed by Ambassador Iliya Damagum and Anyanwu, who are out to destroy the PDP. You don’t need any soothsayer to tell you that both of them are working for the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC),” he alleged.
While he did not immediately disclose which platform he would pursue for his governorship ambition, the younger Fayose hinted that consultations were ongoing with allies and political associates.
He also urged his supporters across Ekiti State to remain calm, promising to announce his next political direction soon.
“My supporters should stay calm; consultations are in progress. We will chart a way forward that reflects the will of the people,” he said.
