The protesters accused Nigerians of engaging in conduct that allegedly violates Ghanaian cultural and societal norms.
The Nigerian Senate Committee on Diaspora and Non-Governmental Organisations (NGOs) has condemned in strong terms the recent anti-Nigerian protest in Ghana, describing the development as “deeply disturbing and contrary to the spirit of African brotherhood.”
This was contained in a statement issued on Tuesday, by the Chairman, Senate Committee on Diaspora and Non-Governmental Organisations (NGOs), following the circulation of a viral video on social media showing a group of Ghanaians protesting and calling for the expulsion of Nigerians from the country.
The protesters accused Nigerians of engaging in conduct that allegedly violates Ghanaian cultural and societal norms.
Reacting to the video, the Committee emphasised the need to preserve the long-standing bond of friendship between Nigeria and Ghana, calling for continued mutual respect and cooperation.
“The two countries must keep the flame of brotherhood alive,” the Committee stated, noting that both nations, as key members of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), “should be at the forefront of promoting peace, unity, and regional integration as enshrined in the ECOWAS charter.”
The Senate Committee also commended the Chairman/CEO of the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NIDCOM), Hon. Abike Dabiri-Erewa, and the Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Bianca Ojukwu, for what it described as their “timely and diplomatic handling of the situation.”
In addition, the Committee praised both the Nigerian and Ghanaian High Commissioners for their collaborative efforts in de-escalating tensions and restoring calm.
Offering reassurance to Nigerians living in Ghana, the Committee said that authorities from both countries “are in active communication and have already taken proactive steps to manage the situation and protect the rights and welfare of Nigerian citizens.”
It affirmed solidarity with “every law-abiding Nigerian in Ghana,” and called for calm as “the appropriate diplomatic channels are being effectively explored.”
The statement also urged Nigerians living in Ghana to “remain law-abiding and desist from inciteful words,” while continuing to “toe the path of peace and harmony.”
