President Tinubu’s led federal government has justified the delay in the appointment of ambassadors.
Tinubu’s aide, Ademola Oshodi, responded to critics and revealed that it took ex-President Muhammadu Buhari 20 months to announce his ambassadors.
In a trending interview, Oshodi further disclosed that Tinubu will announce his ambassadors in a few weeks.
The Presidency has announced that President Bola Tinubu is set to appoint new ambassadors in the coming weeks.
This follows the recall of 83 ambassadors in September 2023 as part of a strategy to realign Nigeria’s foreign policy priorities.
Senior Special Adviser to the President on Foreign Affairs and Protocol, Ademola Oshodi, confirmed the upcoming appointments, stating that a statement will be issued soon.
He said the process is expected to be finalized with Senate approval and accreditation for the new ambassadors.
“I think there will be a statement regarding the ambassadors in the coming weeks, and the Senate and accreditation will take action to place them in their various missions around the world.
“The ambassadors are coming, but the most important thing we should realise is that things are being put in place for the Ambassadors and the High Commissioners.
“We have charge d’affaires to the nations, and consul generals that have been sent, more of a prelude to the ambassadors’ arrival.
“The foreign missions are not in dire straits. The president inherited missions that were not in great shape, so things had to be put in shape and prepared for the ambassadors, and their families, dignitaries, diplomats, etc.
“This is a priority for the President and his administration. Notwithstanding the importance of the ambassadors. Ademola faulted critics, defended the delay and noted that the previous administration under President Muhammadu Buhari took 20 months to appoint ambassadors. I must emphasise unequivocally that even the last administration took 20 months to appoint ambassadors,” Oshodi told Channels Television.
Ademola Oshodi, a senior special adviser on foreign affairs and protocol to Bola Tinubu, revealed this on Channels Television’s 2024 year-in-review programme on Sunday, December 29.
The presidential aide said: “It is something that the President and his administration are focused on. As much as the ambassadors are key, I want to clearly state that even the last administration, without giving excuses, took 20 months for them to put ambassadors in place.”
