- Presidency denies reports of fighter jets bombing Sokoto communities.
- Claims of mistaken airstrike killing villagers labeled as fake news.
- Authorities urged the public to disregard unverified bombing allegations.
The presidency has dismissed reports claiming that fighter jets mistakenly bombed two communities in Sokoto State while targeting terrorists.
President Bola Tinubu’s Special Assistant on Social Media, Dada Olusegun, refuted the allegations late Wednesday via his X account describing the news as false and urged the public to disregard it.
“Kindly disregard any news about fighter jets mistakenly bombing communities in Sokoto,” Olusegun posted.
Mataz Arising gathers that earlier reports had alleged that an airstrike targeting the Lakurawa terrorist group resulted in the bombing of Gidan Sama and Rumtuwa, two communities in the Silame Local Government Area of Sokoto State.
According to the said report, the incident occurred around 7 AM on Wednesday, with residents claiming over ten villagers were killed and several others injured.
Malam Yahya, a resident of Silame, explained that the affected villages are close to Surame Forest, known as a hideout for the Lakurawa group and bandits. A local source added that the airstrike caused significant damage, affecting numerous lives and properties.
The chairman of Silame Local Government Area, Alhaji Abubakar Muhammad Daftarana, confirmed the occurrence of the attack noting that an assessment of the damage was underway but refrained from attributing the incident to a military operation.
