By a Critic
I dont really like her and worked against her in all the elections she participated in and then when Dino went after her, I laughed.
Then she came to our church the fountain of Life in Ilupeju and I just looked at her and walked past. Wetin concern me.
Then it got worse. The errant Senator went to a sex shop and slapped someone and they set up a committee to look into the matter and she goes – we are trying to help you.
The condescending nature of that remark took the better of me and when the Senator lashed out at her, I promptly forgot that he was the fool and jumped for joy.
So when she emerged as our latest First Lady, I didnt expect much
The fact that she now happens to be the most accomplished First Lady apart from maybe Patience Jonathan who paraded a phd but carried along like a denizen didnt make me really jump for joy.
But its one year after, and the – in your face, I am the First Lady activisim of Aisha Buhari is missing.
The uncouth and almost saliva pushing aggression of Patience is missing and the swagger like, all mummy image of Stella Obasanjo is missing.
What we are seeing now is a subtle, guarded and well matured figure such that we have never seen in that office.
The very best in class was Maryann Babangida who complemented her husband so well that at some point, one could argue that she was running a parallel government.
Maryann Abacha built a personality cult which brought together an army of sycophants who had nothing else to do but push for that continuation of the aberation that was Sani Abachas Government
Yardau was silent. We only started hearing her voice when she suddenly woke up and wanted to run the country thru ambitious surrogates
But Remi is beating a more classy path and this coming from a fierce critic of her husband says a lot.
The only times we see or hear of her is her seeking understanding from Nigerians as her hubbys ineffective policies continue to beat us silly.
She will, in very soft and kind words ask for patience, encourage us to bare with them and literaly even apologise for the frying pan to fire situation we seem to have found ourselves
Very unlike her son who is barging in on Federal Executive Council meetings, jumping on presidential jets, riding on skateboards with a coterie of body guards and basically just playing the Absolum game, Remi is quiet.
Her reticence comes from a clear understanding of how the system should work.
The first lady is ceremonial and must not arrogate certain powers to herself and her office
We have been unfortunate to have been blessed with occupants of the office who have run mad.
They have served to distract, attract abuse and been the butt of public disdain as a result of their extravagant show of power and opulance in the midst of hopelessnes driven by vacous leadership with their husbands at the helm.
Remi has shown none of that. She has stayed clear, minded her business and most likely been playing an advisory role from the back.
I want to say that the brilliant relationship bw the Presidency and the National Assembly if we discount the dodginess that characterises that relationship could also be traced to her doorstep.
As a ranking Senator, she would be in a better position to advise her husband and his team on relations, processes and all, in building the evil relationship that continies to defy all democratic logic bw the two organs of Government.
If you ask me, I think Remi is the best First Lady in recent times and I agree it might just be too early to make that assertion but if what we have seen in the last one year is anything to go by, then Nigerians will really have nothing to worry about with this First Lady.
She is doing well- so far
Thanks
