It was an American science fiction author and a multiple award winner, Octavia Butler who succinctly captured the whole essence of leadership and its consequences. He posited thus: “Choose your leaders with wisdom and forethought. To be led by a coward is to be controlled by all that the coward fears. To be led by a fool is to be led by the opportunists who controls the fool. To be led by a thief is to offer up your most precious treasures to be stolen. To be led by a liar is to be asked to be told lies.”
The events in the past few days warrant for soul searching and embracing the truth. The truth is that Nigeria is running a collapsed system. PITY!
About two months ago, an ex-United State ambassador to Nigeria, John Campbell (L), said it’s time for the United States of America to acknowledge that Nigeria is a failed state. Campbell stated this in the light of the many security threats plaguing the country. I am tempted to completely agree with the seasoned diplomat. The situation has become appalling.
From the foregoing, NIGERIANS are going through excruciating pains ranging from economic downturn, insecurity, poor leadership, election rigging, kidnapping, banditry, insurgency, cronyism, clannishness and nepotism to political instability.
In the midst of the hardship occasioned by irresponsible leadership, some irredentist characters backed by the state apparatus begin to carelessly engaging in ego tripping and flaunting questionable wealth.
This is certainly not the nation that our heroes envisioned.
In an environment like ours, where our leaders steal from the coffers of the government with impunity, with no consequence, but rewarded with chieftancy titles, it was not entirely a surprise for certain DCP Abba Kyari, supposedly a super cop, to be fingered in an international scam, wearing Nigeria police force uniform with the rank of a commissioner.
A lie can travel half way around the world while the truth is still putting on its shoes, one day, the truth will catch up. Nigerians have been serially violated, cheated and lied to, it has become so depressing.
There have been several cases where serious infractions ranging from corrupt practices to outright criminalities were swept under the carpet. Nigerians are all waiting and watching to see how Kyari’s case is handled, are they going to hand him over to the US authorities to go and defend himself, or try him in Nigeria? If he is tried in Nigeria, what will the verdict be?
One thing is certain, the Americans will not be manipulated in a case of this magnitude because it challenges their criminal justice system, which they do not play with.
May God save Nigeria
