The increased insecurity situation in the northern parts of Nigeria is extremely concerning and thus it has become necessary for our leaders in the southern part of the country to put aside party affiliations and other partisan issues that may come into play, and to put the safety of our children before any partisanship or political correctness.
This is a very urgent appeal to concerned parents, Organised Private Sector and NGOs, traditional rulers to now lobby and mount pressure on Southern Nigeria Governors, Senators and House of Representatives members about the urgent need for Graduates from their region to be offered first preference to serve exclusively in Southern Nigeria States, and not posted to high security prone States of Northern Nigeria.
Without prejudice, this policy is counterproductive and appears to favour those graduates from the North being posted to the relatively secure and stable Southern parts of Nigeria especially, when the federal government is hesitant in securing lives and properties up north, where, almost every week tens, sometimes hundreds of students are being kidnapped for ransom, many are being raped, and many losing their lives. The safety of their children is highly pertinent and important, and must, at all cost be placed above any other interests the governors may have.
THINGS ARE NOT NORMAL IN BUHARI’S NIGERIA, THEREFORE, LET THE SOUTH SERVE IN THE SOUTH AND THE NORTH SERVE IN THE NORTH. I AM SORRY I HAVE TO SAY THIS, NEVER DID I THINK THAT THE DAY WILL COME, THAT I WILL SPLIT OUR CHILDREN ALONG REGIONAL LINES. HOWEVER, WHAT’S GOT TO BE DONE HAS GOT TO BE DONE TO SECURE THE LIVES OF OUR CHILDREN!
I will seize this opportunity to further advise the southern governors to start recruiting graduating youth corpers on merit. The days when graduands from one section of the country is favoured over others in occupying juicy positions in Banks, Oil and Gas, Insurance, Consumer Marketing and Conglomerate sectors to mention few must be stopped. THE SOUTH MUST FOCUS ON DEVELOPING THE SOUTH, MAKING SURE THAT AS MANY AS POSSIBLE OF THEIR CHILDREN ARE NOT UNEMPLOYED .
It is not the joy of parents who have invested heavily on their sons and daughters to see them needlessly consumed by avoidable risks in the face on National Service, and when they finish their service to become unemployed due to quota, this system must not be allowed to destroy the future of our children in the south.
There must be a rethink of how the National Youth Service Corp Scheme (NYSC) is going to be domiciled and run moving forward, as it’s beginning to appear like the old system has outlived its useful life in its current form and considering the fragile security situations around the country.
Best wishes,
AO
