Senate President, Godswill Akpabio, has linked the rising insecurity in Nigeria to the build-up towards the next elections, insisting that the situation will change once the polls are concluded.
He made the statement on Tuesday at the official launch of the Nigerian Revenue Service Corporate Headquarters in Abuja, where he also praised President Bola Tinubu for his performance in office.
Akpabio argued that opposition figures, unable to counter the administration’s progress, were resorting to sponsoring insecurity.
According to him, the security situation is temporary and politically motivated, adding that it would disappear shortly after the elections.
He said, “Insecurity is increasing because election is coming, because people don’t know what to do again. Immediately after election, two weeks after election, the insecurity will stop. The insecurity is being sponsored by people.”
The Senate President also criticised the opposition, taking a swipe at the Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi, whom he accused of political inconsistency.
He said, “Opposition is in disarray, someone got six million votes and abandoned the party, abandoned the six million votes and went shopping for another platform, and they are blaming the ruling party.”
Akpabio urged Nigerians to remain patient with the current administration, saying it is moving in the right direction.
He said, “Let Nigerians be patient with you, you are doing the right thing.”
He also praised Dr Zacch Adedeji, describing him as a rare and effective tax administrator.
He said, “Even in the Bible, people don’t like tax collectors. Zacch has done very well, and Nigerians are happy with him.”
The event was attended by top government officials, including President Bola Tinubu, Deputy Senate President Jibrin Barau, Speaker of the House of Representatives Tajudeen Abbas, and Deputy Speaker Benjamin Kalu.
Others present included Secretary to the Government of the Federation George Akume, National Security Adviser Nuhu Ribadu, members of the Federal Executive Council, and several state governors.
The newly inaugurated Nigerian Revenue Service Corporate Headquarters is a 16-storey facility made up of three towers and is designed to accommodate about 3,000 staff members.
