The Nigeria Police Force has dismissed reports claiming that the Inspector-General of Police, IGP Olatunji Disu, ordered the disbandment of all tactical units across state commands nationwide.
In a statement issued on Sunday, the Force described the report titled “RE: BREAKING: INSPECTOR-GENERAL DISU DISBANDS ALL POLICE UNITS, SQUADS AT STATE COMMANDS, ORDERS IMMEDIATE RESTRUCTURING.” as misleading.
According to the statement, the publication misrepresented the directives of the IGP, noting that no blanket dissolution of tactical units was ordered.
The police explained that while the IGP recognises the importance of tactical teams in crime-fighting, he has expressed concern over their growing number and the impact on manpower at police divisions and posts.
The statement noted that the proliferation of these units has also led to cases of misconduct due to poor supervision, thereby affecting the image of the Force.
To address these concerns, the IGP directed a reduction in the number of tactical teams. Under the directive, Zonal and State Commands are to operate a maximum of five tactical teams, while Area Commands and Divisions are limited to three.
The police added that the adjustment may involve merging or disbanding certain teams at the discretion of heads of formations.
It clarified that the directive does not apply to state government-backed outfits such as the Rapid Response Squad in Lagos, the Special Response Squad in Oyo, and other similar units across the country.
The Force said the move is aimed at strengthening police divisions, improving supervision, and addressing public complaints about the excesses of some tactical teams.
