President Bola Tinubu on Wednesday met with Britain’s Prince William as part of his ongoing state visit to the United Kingdom, the first by a Nigerian leader in nearly four decades.
Tinubu, who arrived in London on Tuesday alongside First Lady Oluremi Tinubu, was received with full ceremonial honours at Windsor Castle by King Charles III and senior members of the Royal Family, including Queen Camilla and the Prince and Princess of Wales.
The visit underscores the long-standing diplomatic ties between Nigeria and the United Kingdom, with both sides expected to deepen cooperation in key areas. Trade between the two countries has grown steadily, reaching £8.1 billion in the year to September 2025.
Both Tinubu and King Charles III are expected to speak at a state banquet on Wednesday evening, although the traditional luncheon with the monarch will not take place as the President is observing the Ramadan fast.
The visit also comes against the backdrop of renewed security concerns in Nigeria following recent bombings in Maiduguri. Reacting to the attacks, Tinubu said, “I want to make it categorically clear that these acts of terror are the final desperate and frantic attempts by criminals and terrorist elements trying to instil and spread fear.”
He had earlier directed security chiefs to relocate to Maiduguri to “take charge of the situation,” signalling the Federal Government’s resolve to contain the threat and restore confidence in the affected region.
During the visit, Tinubu is expected to meet British Prime Minister Keir Starmer and members of the Nigerian community in the UK, as both countries continue to build on their strategic partnership aimed at strengthening cooperation in trade, security and development.
