For thousands of Nigerians hoping to renew their U.S. visas hassle-free, the abrupt suspension of the drop box service came as an unpleasant surprise.
Once a convenient process that allowed eligible applicants to renew visas without an in-person interview, the drop box option was quietly removed over the weekend, sparking concerns and frustration among travelers.

Now, the Federal Government is stepping in. The Chairman of the House of Representatives Committee on Foreign Affairs, Oluwole Oke, has assured Nigerians that diplomatic steps will be taken to address the situation.
Speaking on Sunrise Daily, a Channels Television program, on Tuesday, Oke confirmed that he would personally engage with Nigerian and U.S. officials to seek clarity on the matter.
“I am currently in the U.S. and will take this matter up. After my meetings in New York, I will head to Washington to discuss with our chargé d’affaires and relevant stakeholders,” Oke stated.
While many Nigerians see the suspension as a setback, Oke downplayed the decision, emphasizing the principle of reciprocity in diplomacy. According to him, the U.S. government had the right to modify its visa policies, just as Nigeria determines its own.
“This isn’t a crisis. The U.S. allowed Nigerians to use the drop box system at their discretion. Interestingly, Nigeria does not offer Americans the same privilege when renewing their Nigerian visas.”
For years, the U.S. issued Nigerians two-year visas, while Americans were granted only one-year Nigerian visas. Oke noted that it was not until President Bola Ahmed Tinubu took office that Nigeria adjusted its policy to match the U.S., allowing Americans to receive five-year visas.
“Unfortunately, this was their decision to make. When I reached out to the Minister of Foreign Affairs, he confirmed that no official communication had been received from the U.S. regarding the change,” he added.
Despite the setback, Oke expressed optimism that the U.S. government would reconsider certain policies affecting Nigerian travelers, emphasizing Nigeria’s significance on the global stage.
“Nigeria is a key player in global affairs. No country can afford to ignore us. Take it from me—we are a valuable asset. The world is watching, and I believe positive diplomatic engagements will yield results.”
The drop box system was widely appreciated for streamlining visa renewals, particularly for those with a recent U.S. travel history. With its suspension, all applicants—including those renewing their visas—will now be required to attend in-person interviews, a move that could increase waiting times and complicate travel plans for many Nigerians.
