SOUTH African President Cyril Ramaphosa appealed for calm at the weekend as violent protests followed the jailing of his predecessor Jacob Zuma.
Shops were looted and at least 25 lorries were set on fire on Friday in Kwa Zulu Natal province, a stronghold of support for Mr Zuma.
Regional police chief Jay Naicker confirmed that 28 arrests had been made and major roads were barricaded after Mr Zuma started a 15-month jail term for failing to appear in front of a corruption investigation.
His Jacob Zuma Foundation said the unrest was an expression of “righteous anger” over injustices at the court decisions and it refused to condemn the violence.
Kwa Zulu Natal Premier Sihle Zikalala said that he understood the anger of the protesters.
“Unfortunately violence and destruction often attack and affect even people who are not involved,” he said.
Mr Ramaphosa said that “criminal elements must be met with the full might of the law” following the unrest.
Mr Zuma is set to challenge his sentence in court tomorrow on grounds of ill health and the risk of contracting Covid-19.
