Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has condemned the recent killings of innocent Nigerians, claiming that it has reached epidemic proportions and endangers Nigeria’s common humanity.
According to reports, gunmen attacked a mosque during morning prayers on Tuesday in the Unguwan Mantau town of Malumfashi LGA in Katsina state, killing at least 32 worshippers.
Nasir Mu’azu, the State Commissioner for Internal Security and Home Affairs, described the incident as a retaliatory attack after locals ambushed and lynched suspected bandits two days earlier.
During the incident, residents confiscated three motorcycles and two AK-47 weapons, as well as rescued kidnapped individuals from Ruwan Sanyi village.
In a tweet uploaded on his X account on Wednesday, Atiku stated that the killings were no more isolated incidents, but had become a terrible reality in northern Nigeria and other regions of the country.
He added that the government’s posture shows denial of the worsening security situation.
The 2023 Peoples Democratic Party’s presidential candidate further explained that the time has come for the government to prioritise its core duty of safeguarding lives and property.
“The wanton killings of innocent Nigerians have reached the epidemic level. Only on Tuesday, in Katsina, at least 27 innocent worshippers were massacred inside a mosque by marauding bandits during morning prayers.
“This attack was not just against a community; it was an assault on our collective humanity,” he wrote.
